This post is sponsored by Zespri Kiwifruit who I love for their gorgeous yellow SunGold kiwifruit!
Normally when I eat kiwi I just do the regular ol' "cut & scoop" method. Just cutting the kiwi in half and scooping with a spoon, but these days grilling fruit is my new favourite thing! I grilled up both a pineapple and an avocado (is avocado a fruit?) in my Grilled Pineapple and Avocado Noodles, now I am grilling up kiwifruit, and not just any kiwifruit, but SunGold kiwis!
Have you ever seen these guys? I wasn't even aware that golden kiwifruit was a thing! These little yellow dudes are where it's at. The skin of the fruit isn't fuzzy like the green ones, and the inside is this lovely warm yellow. The flavour of them is milder and sweeter than green kiwis, so clearly, I am in love!
By grilling fruit, not only are you taking them from plain old kiwis to seems-gourmet-immediatly, but the sugars start to caramelize and brown making the kiwis even sweeter. See, there is method to my madness.
Now top these grilled kiwis with a quick, 2 ingredient coconut whipped cream, and oh man is this a treat! So many flavour sensations, the sweet and tart kiwifruit, creamy and rich coconut whipped cream, the warm and cool pairing, it's a total tropical treat, mouth explosion, must do this everyday kind of dessert.
Zespri Kiwifruit can be found at your local supermarket from May to October. If you see the SunGold variety, I recommend trying one, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. Chalk a block full of vitamin C, E, potassium and fibre, as all kiwis are, makes this dessert pretty dang healthy for you too!
To make this dish, first start with the whipped cream. Get a can of coconut cream, premium coconut milk, or a very good quality full-fat coconut milk. Not all coconut milk is made the same. If you find coconut cream or premium coconut milk, you are likely good to go, but when it comes to coconut milk, the brand that I have seen work best is Thai Kitchen. Put the can in your fridge overnight.
When you are ready to prepare the coconut whipped cream, take the can out and flip it upside down. Open it, and there will be coconut water sitting on top. Pour that off. The remainder of the can with be the coconut cream that has turned solid.
If your coconut milk doesn't turn solid then use the coconut milk for a different recipe, such as my Creamy Coconut Garlic Mushrooms and try again with a different brand. Once you find the brand that works the best for you, make sure to note it. I always have a few cans sitting in the back of my fridge ready to go for coconut whipped cream emergencies! (Yes, there is such a thing).
Now add the powdered sugar to the coconut whipped cream.
Then beat it in. Unlike traditional whipped cream, you aren't going from liquid to fluff, you are starting with a solid and beating it down until it is fluffed. If your whipped cream is too stiff, add in a tablespoon at a time of the coconut water until the desired consistency is reached. So fluffy!! Keep chilled in the fridge until ready to serve.
You can use green kiwis or the SunGold variety, whatever you like! Slice off the top and bottom of the kiwis, then insert a spoon between the skin and fruit. Rotate the spoon around the fruit to remove all the skin. This takes a little practise to get working perfectly, but it makes a gorgeous smooth and round kiwi, perfect for eating whole, or in this case, grilling up!
Slice the kiwis in half lengthwise, and put them on a lightly greased hot grill. You can use a grill pan like I did, or a barbecue. Grill for just a few minutes until the kiwis are fragrant and the bottoms caramelize and get golden.
Like this! I found mine stuck the the pan a little bit, so just use a spatula to gently lift them off. Serve with a dollop of the coconut whipped cream, and prepare for your total tropical treat sensation.

I'm writing a fictional story and have made one of my characters wild for kiwi-fruit so this recipe will be mentioned as simply grilled kiwis
Thanks very much for a yummy dessert type option

What do you do with the coconut water left from the coconut milk?
Sam Turnbull says
You could use it in a smoothie 🙂
Karen says
Thank you! But what else as I don’t make smoothies often enough. I was wondering about soups or gravies, maybe some desserts requiring liquid. Does it freeze well for later use?

Simple and delicious recipe! Previous to trying this recipe, I never realized that there was such a thing as SunGold kiwis-- well let me tell you, they are wonderful! They were sitting inconspicuously next to the green variety, so if you're wondering where they might be in your grocery store, just take a closer look; they're probably there, you just never noticed, like me.
Sam, I recommend that you try the Native Forest brand of coconut milk as it's much healthier than the Thai Kitchen brand since the ingredients are a higher quality.
Sam Turnbull says
Thanks for the tip! I haven't seen that brand around, but I will keep my eye out for it 🙂
Rebecca says
You're welcome. It's sold at Whole Foods here in the US or you can get it on Amazon.

looks delish alright. I am not a big fan of Kiwi, but I will look for this new golden fruit. Gold fruit. There are fairy tales about that.
Sam Turnbull says
I definitely like them more then green kiwis. 🙂
