    What does hemp milk taste like? Similar to almond milk, hemp milk is neutral with a light nutty flavor, but it is actually much creamier than either almond or soy milk. This is why it is one of my favorite non-dairy milks to use when cooking, in baking, or in my coffee. Yum!

    Not only is it tasty, but hemp milk is very good for you. Hemp hearts are incredibly nutritious. They are high in protein and are rich in healthy fats and essential amino acids including omega-3 and omega-6. They are also a great source of vitamin E and minerals, such as potassium, phosphorus, magnesium, calcium, and iron.

    One of the reasons I love making hemp milk is that hemp hearts are naturally very tender, so they are easily broken down in a blender no soaking is required! This is why they are such an amazing option for making homemade plant-based milk that is completely nut free.

    Just add the hemp hearts and water to a blender, and blend! That's it. No straining or nut milk bag is needed because there is no pulp. You can optionally add a bit of sweetener such as agave, maple syrup, or sugar, a pinch of vanilla, and if you want chocolate hemp milk just mix in some cocoa or cacao powder.

    Hemp hearts are very healthy and are great for making a non-dairy nut free milk.

    How to Make Hemp Milk:

    The only ingredients you will need are water and hemp hearts. Ensure that you are using hemp hearts (which are hulled hemp seeds). Do not use hemp seeds as they will not blend properly. Hemp hearts can be found in the health food section of your grocery store. If your store doesn't carry them you can get them at health food stores, or on amazon. You can also additionally mix in a sweetener of choice and/or vanilla extract or cocoa powder to your milk if you desire.

    Just blend and enjoy!

    The instructions are the same whether you are making hemp milk or hemp cream. Add the water and hemp hearts to a blender. Optionally you can add sweetener and/or vanilla extract. Blend very well until it is completely smooth and creamy (I like to blend for at least 2 minutes). Pour into a bottle or container with a lid and store in the fridge until ready to use. It should keep fresh for up to 5 - 7 days or you can freeze it. Shake well before using as the milk can settle and separate. Use the hemp milk on cereal, in baking, when cooking in coffee, or tea, anywhere you like!

    Ingredients
     

    For hemp milk:

    • 3 ½ cups water
    • ½ cup hemp hearts

    For hemp cream:

    • 1 cup water
    • ½ cup hemp hearts

    Optional add ins:

    • 1 - 4 tablespoons sweetener of choice (maple syrup, agave, sugar)
    • ½ teaspoons vanilla extract
    • 1 - 3 tablespoons cocoa powder, (for chocolate hemp milk)

      I like this, unfortunately I still felt the need to strain it, even then it still felt grainy when drinking. Both my water and hemp hearts were cold right out of the fridge. Should they be room temp or hotter, or do I just need to invest in an expensive more powerful blender?

        Hi Linda, hemp hearts are very soft and should blend easily. Are you sure you were using shelled hemp hearts? If they are not shelled the husk will be difficult to blend, even with a high-powered blender. You could also try letting the hemp hearts soak in the water for 20 - 30 minutes before blending so they can soften up. I hope that helps!

      My daughter has so many allergies so hemp is one of my go-to’s. Have you used this in making desserts or ice cream? I attempted to make ice cream with hemp milk (store bought) and it didn’t turn out great. I wonder if it’s the additives or if I need something heavier, like the cream recipe. Any ideas? Appreciate any help!

        Hi Laura, I haven't tried it, but my guess is because the store-bought versions are too watered down. You could try my cashew based ice cream recipe, and sub hemp hearts instead of cashews and I bet that would work. You might want to start with a 1/2 or 1/4 batch first just to make sure it works. I hope that helps!

      Hello! I am grateful for this recipe. I made the hemp milk version and first tried it in hot tea, worked fine and tastes great. I tried it in hot coffee and it curdled then settled to the bottom. I really want to make this work - any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

        As we understand it, because coffee has a higher pH, the acidity will curdle the milk on contact. But if you add the coffee very slowly to warm hemp milk, then the ph will slowly increase and will be less likely to curdle.

        You could add a bit of sunflower lecithin - it helps prevent splitting. I add it to my creamer (~1/2 teaspoon of lecithin in 1.5 cups of creamer).

      What a great idea!! I have been concerned about all the additives my soy milk lists so I would love to give this a go. Just a question: I've never seen "hemp hearts" in Australia - are these any different to hemp seeds?

          Thanks Val 🙂 I've since been doing some more digging and found that here in Tasmania we actually have a local hemp farm who produce hemp hearts so I've ordered a kilo! I think you are right and they are hemp seeds which have been shelled. Looking forward to giving this recipe a go.

      Less muss and fuss than oat milk, Sam. Thanks kindly! I'm thinking ~1/8 teaspoon coconut extract added would make a lovely alternate to (the ridiculously-high-fat-content) coconut milk.

        one ounce of hemp hearts, which roughly translates to one cup of milk here, has 15g of fat. A cup of unsweetened coconut milk has 4g of fat.
