FEATURED COMMENT:
I made these for Lilly, my Goldendoodle, and she loves them! She would eat all of them at one time if I let her. Thank you for the recipe! - Stephanie ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Every now and then on this blog I like to share a doggy treat recipe that my rescue pup Chickpea loves. Over the years, these recipes have actually become some of my most popular recipes of all time! Clearly, Chickpea is a very good recipe critic.
I came up with this recipe when I wanted to make Chickpea her favorite pumpkin treats, but I didn't have any canned pumpkin in my cupboard. What I did have on hand were two bananas that were getting a bit too spotty. Chickpea also loves bananas and they are very for healthy dogs so I tried the swap and it worked beautifully! In fact, I think Chickpea likes them even more than the pumpkin treats. Just look how happy she is!!
Not only are these homemade dog treats super easy to make but you likely already have the ingredients on hand, and it's a great way to use up old bananas. (Other than making my favorite banana bread recipe, or chocolate chip banana squares recipe).
Feel free to half this homemade dog treats recipe recipe if you only have one banana on hand (or if you want to do a trial run). You can also double or triple this recipe if your dog loves them as much as Chickpea does. I have a huge bag of them in the freezer so I can give one to her whenever she deserves a little cookie. Now she always gets super excited when I open to the freezer... and super disappointed when she discovers that I was just reaching for the coffee beans. Haha. Oh alright, you can have on more...
Ingredients needed:
To make these dog treats for your favorite pet, all you need are these three ingredients- peanut butter, banana, and oats!
- Peanut Butter: make sure that the peanut butter you use is natural peanut butter. The only ingredient should be peanuts. Do not use processed peanut butter that contains added oils, sugars, and salt. That stuff is basically frosting and is bad for our pups. Peanut butter is a great source of protein and healthy fats for our dogs as well as vitamins B and E, and niacin.
- Banana: this is the perfect recipe to use up those bananas that are getting a bit old. Bananas have potassium, vitamin C, vitamin B6, fiber, and magnesium which are all healthy nutrients for dogs.
- Oats: you can use whole oats, 1- minute oats, or instant oats, as long as there aren't any added sugars or other ingredients. In this recipe, I grind the oats into a powder to make homemade oat flour. If you have a food processor or blender, this takes just a few seconds to do and is usually more affordable than buying premade oat flour. I also always have oats on hand so it's nice that I don't have to go out to get anything special. Oats are very healthy for our pooches as they are high in fiber, contain vitamin B, and omega-6 fatty acid among other good nutrients.
How to make dog treats:
Preheat your oven to 300F (150C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
Add the oats to a food processor and grind until they reach a fine powder. (If you do not have a food processor, see the recipe notes for other options).
Add the bananas and peanut butter and blend until a sticky dough is formed.
Remove the mixture from the food processor and use a rolling pin to roll out on a lightly floured surface. (Use whole wheat flour, more ground oats, or another dog-safe flour that you have on hand). I used a heart cookie cutter to cut out the treats but you could use a bone cookie cutter, or any shape cookie cutter, or just cut them into squares with a knife or pizza cutter.
Lay the treats on the prepared baking sheet and bake for 25 to 30 minutes, until the treats are puffed up a bit, dry and dark golden brown on the bottoms, (they will still feel soft when first removed from the oven).
These homemade dog biscuits will get a bit more firm once they are cool but will still be a slightly softer dog treat. Let cool before giving one to your pup.
Store them in an air-tight container at room temperature for up to 1 week, in the fridge for up to 2 weeks, or I like to store them in my freezer which makes them firmer and makes them stay fresh a long time.

When I made these the dough didn’t form a ball. How long do you process them for? I got a very mushy dough what did I do wrong
Helen says
Same here - impossible to roll out ..
Sam Turnbull @ It Doesn't Taste Like Chicken says
Hi Anne, it's ok if the dough doesn't form a ball, if you look at the photos, mine isn't in a ball either. Once blended, just scoop out the dough and roll out. Enjoy!
Pavitra says
Hi there, can I know at what temperature should I bake them at?
Sam Turnbull @ It Doesn't Taste Like Chicken says
Hi Pavitra, this information is included in the recipe. You can bake at 300F (150C). Enjoy!

When freezing do I need to defrost the treat before giving to my dog?

We recommend letting it sit in the fridge overnight or at least 6 hours before sharing with your dog.

I have a question how long do these last
Sam Turnbull @ It Doesn't Taste Like Chicken says
Hi Isaish, this information is at the end of the recipe. I have copied and pasted it here for you: "Store in an air-tight container at room temperature for up to 1 week, in the fridge for up to 2 weeks, or I like to store them in my freezer which makes them firmer and makes them stay fresh a long time." I hope that helps!
Mandy says
Is it okay to make the dough ahead of time and refrigerating it until you're ready to bake?
Sam Turnbull @ It Doesn't Taste Like Chicken says
Yes absolutely! The dough should keep for up to 2 days in the fridge when properly wrapped and stored. Enjoy!

Hello! How many oat flour should I use if I don't grind it myself? But I would like to make it with oat flour in the first place. Thanks Zsolt
Jess @ It Doesn't Taste Like Chicken says
162g of oat flour is required
Tracy says
I have just made a half batch of these dog treats to see how well they come out. I've never made dog biscuits before, but have offered to make some for a local charity fayre.
I have used a small dog bone cookie cutter and the rolled out depth of the dough at about 0.5cm. Would this be about right, or will they come out of the oven too hard? They are baking as I type.
Thank you.
Jess @ It Doesn't Taste Like Chicken says
It sounds like you were on the right track. We hope they turned out great!
Kadra says
So easy and doesn’t make my dog’s stomach upset like store bought treats!
Sam Turnbull @ It Doesn't Taste Like Chicken says
That's wonderful!
Shemira says
Thanks for the recipe! I used one small oven-roasted acorn squash (no seeds or rhine) and regular, non natural peanut butter because that's what I had on hand (it is xylitol free though). I probably only used 1/4-1/3 cup peanut butter instead of the full half.
When it was time to roll the dough, parchment paper was essential, as well as placing my rolled dough in the freezer for 15 minutes before cutting out the shapes. Before chilling the dough it was impossible for the cookie cutter to work and I really wanted cute cut outs; not regular round cookies.
Jess @ It Doesn't Taste Like Chicken says
Thanks for sharing your experience and tips for success!
Dawn says
My pack absolutely loves these and they are so easy to make. I love that I know exactly what is going into them and no byproducts, preservatives or names that I am unable to pronounce!
Sam Turnbull @ It Doesn't Taste Like Chicken says
So happy to hear that Dawn 🙂
Louise says
I’ve just made my second batch as my first for some reason i added a jar of peanut butter.
Both batches my Labrador loves them.
I brought a small bone shape cutter and they are perfect.
Look forward to more recipe ideas.
Thank you so much from myself and Otto.
DRidd says
A lot of peanut butter contains xylitol, which is extremely toxic to dogs, please, please can you add this information to the ingredient list!
Sam Turnbull @ It Doesn't Taste Like Chicken says
Natural peanut butter should only contain peanuts and no other ingredients, but I added it to the recipe notes for clarification 🙂
Mother Grumble says
Your dog is so cute!Chickpea is adorable.Am gonna make this for my bake sale soon (also for my puggy pup Mustard).
Looks yum
Libby says
My granddaughter and I made these for her dogs.
Using a Vitamix we made the flour from oats, then mixed in the banana and peanut butter, but the mixture was very sticky, and we needed to add whole wheat flour (about a1/2cup) to make a mix that could be rolled out and cut into shapes.
Also, I'm curious about the thickness of your biscuits. Ours were about 1/2 inch thick, they never really got dark brown on the bottom, and needed extra time (about 15 additional minutes) to bake. Please let us know if I've missed something in our preparation.
All that said - the dogs did love them!
Jess @ It Doesn't Taste Like Chicken says
We're glad the dogs loved them. 1/2 inch may be a little thick so you could go to 1/4 inch the next go around!
Deanne Partlow says
Has anyone baked the dough as a whole and cut up afterward? How long to bake? Going to make these for my Pomsky babies soon. Thank you!
Jess @ It Doesn't Taste Like Chicken says
I don't believe so. Might be tough to get it baked all the way through but please let us know if you try it out.
KarenSue says
So super easy and my 5 babies just love them. I keep them in a special treat container in the fridge so when they see it they go
Crazy!! Thank you for sharing this recipe. I am anxious to try your others.
Sarah says
Can these be stored at room temp?
Sam Turnbull @ It Doesn't Taste Like Chicken says
Yes, but ensure that they are 100% dry before storing them. No moisture should remain as that is what can cause them to mold. Enjoy!
Emily Rainford says
can these last in open air? thinking about making some for a business.
Sam Turnbull @ It Doesn't Taste Like Chicken says
Hi Emily, yes they can, but in order to make sure they are safe make sure they are 100% dry and there is no moisture remaining before storing. If you happen to have a dehydrator that would be great. Enjoy!
Morgan says
These look good and so easy! Do you think you could sub in pumpkin puree for the banana and have the same outcome? And What thickness do you roll them out to? Thanks!
Sam Turnbull @ It Doesn't Taste Like Chicken says
Hi Morgan, I would recommend trying my pumpkin dog treats recipe! I usually roll them out to 1/4" - 1/2" thickness. I hope that helps 🙂
Morgan says
Thanks!
Karen solla says
can these be frozen?
Sam Turnbull @ It Doesn't Taste Like Chicken says
Hi Karen, yes, absolutely! I store mine in the freezer.
Linda D Hinde says
I even like them! I didn't have oat flour so used gluten free baking flour. Might need to adjust. I'm sure my two boyz will love them. A nice find! Tahnk you.
Jess @ It Doesn't Taste Like Chicken says
I hope they do!
