I love making fancy tofu recipes, but sometimes it's good to go back to the basics and show you how to properly do the simplest of recipes. That's why today I'm sharing with you my favorite grilled tofu. This vegan BBQ tofu recipe is perfect for a quick main dish for your summer feast so that you can get back to enjoying the beautiful weather and outdoor activities.
Serve BBQ tofu with as many sides as you like such as my famous potato salad, macaroni salad, vegan pretzel buns, corn ribs, cowboy caviar, vegan cobb salad, or my creamy chipotle lime bean salad. And of course don't forget a little dessert, how about my strawberry ice cream or vegan strawberry cheesecake pops for a perfect summer treat?
Common Questions:
Does tofu BBQ well? Yes!! Tofu is very neutral in flavor so it will take on BBQ flavors very well!
Can you cook tofu on the grill? Yes!! Tofu is great for grilling, just make sure you use extra-firm or super-firm tofu to ensure it is strong enough to hold up on the grill.
What goes well with BBQ Tofu? Anything you would normally serve alongside BBQ chicken would work wonderfully paired with tofu. Salads, potatoes, grilled veggies or mushrooms, zucchini, or corn on the cob.
How many calories are in BBQ Tofu? one serving is 192 calories, but it can vary depending on the barbecue sauce you use.
How thick to cut tofu for grilling? I recommend that you cut it at least ½ inch thick or even thicker. If your tofu is too thin it can break, so keep it on the thicker side.
How do you press tofu for grilling? I love using my Tofuture tofu press, but you can also follow these instructions for a DIY tofu pressing method. Pressing the tofu squeezes excess water out so that the tofu can suck up more of the marinade and become more flavourful.Â

Prepare your grill or grill pan by making sure it is clean and warmed to medium-high heat.
Slice the tofu block into 4 steaks at least ½ inch thick or thicker. Drizzle the tofu with the olive oil and rub over the tofu.
Season with salt, garlic powder, and black pepper and rub into the oil.
Place the tofu on the hot grill. Cook for 3 to 5 minutes or until they easily release from the grates and nice grill marks are formed. Flip the tofu and repeat on the other side.
Brush the tofu generously with BBQ sauce flip and cook for 2 minutes on each side. Brush with more BBQ sauce before serving. Serve hot.

Hmm... interesting. I don't have a grill or grill plate. Any idea if this could work in the oven, or a frying pan, or in a tiny single pancake electric griddle?
Thanks. 🙂

Im going to use my air fryer with parchment paper to get it a bit crispy - easy cleanup rather than messing the small pancake maker/ any pan would do - its just the idea of making tofu with bbq sauce
Sam Turnbull @ It Doesn't Taste Like Chicken says
Hi Kay, yes you could make this in a cast iron skillet or non-stick frying pan. I hope that helps!
