This Homemade Dog Treats Recipe is quick and easy to make! With just 3 ingredients: peanut butter, carrot, and oats. They are so cheap to make and are healthy for your dogs too. And most important of all, dogs LOVE them!!
I've shared several homemade dog treat recipes because my dog Chickpea loves them! When I give her the option between store-bought dog treats and homemade, she always chooses the homemade treats. I think it's because the ingredients are so much fresher, there are no preservatives, and of course, they are made with love. ❤️
See how much she loves them!? ⬇️ Haha. Not only are these peanut butter dog treats a fave of Chickpea's, but they are SO affordable too. With just peanut butter, carrots, and oats, you can make an entire big bag of dog treats (about 28 medium-sized treats) for about $2.25. For a similar bag of dog treats bought at the store, it would cost around $16!
This dog biscuit recipe is made up of 3 simple ingredients that you likely already have in your kitchen: peanut butter, carrots, and oats.
Peanut Butter: make sure that the peanut butter you use is natural peanut butter. The only ingredient should be peanuts. Do not use peanut butter that contains xylitol (which is poisonous to dogs). And do not use processed peanut butter that contains added oils, sugars, and salt. That stuff is basically frosting and is bad for our pups. Natural peanut butter is a great source of protein and healthy fats for our dogs as well as vitamins B and E, and niacin. I almost always include peanut butter in my homemade dog treats recipes because pooches just love it! It's also a great binder.
Carrots: carrot peels are rich in nutrients, so I don't bother peeling the carrots first. Then I just boil them to soften them. If you prefer, you can use frozen cooked carrots (thaw them first), or canned cooked carrots. Carrots are high in essential nutrients, making them an excellent addition to a dog's diet. Carrots are rich in beta-carotene, which supports healthy vision, and immune function. Additionally, the high fiber content in carrots promotes digestive health.
Oats:Â you can use whole oats, 1- minute oats, or instant oats, as long as there aren't any added sugars or other ingredients. Oats are very healthy for our pooches as they are high in fiber, and contain vitamin B, and omega-6 fatty acids among other good nutrients.
How to make Peanut Butter & Carrot Homemade Dog Treats:
Preheat your oven to 300F (150C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
Add the carrots to a medium pot and cover with water. Bring to a boil and cook until fork tender, 5 - 10 minutes. Drain the carrots.
Add the boiled carrots along with the oats and peanut butter to a food processor and mix well until the carrots and oats are broken down and a soft sticky dough forms.
If your homemade dog treats dough is too wet, add more oats. If your dough is too dry, add more peanut butter or carrots.
Remove from the food processor and place the dough on a sheet of parchment paper. Place another sheet of parchment paper on top, use a rolling pin to roll the dough out to about ½ inch (1.3 cm) thick.
Cut the dough into treats. I used this bone-shaped cookie cutter to cut out the treats but you could use any cookie cutter, or just cut them into squares with a knife or pizza cutter. Gather any dough scraps, and reroll to make more treats.
Bake the homemade dog treats for 35 - 40 minutes, until the treats are dry and lightly browned on the bottoms, (they will still feel soft when first removed from the oven). The treats will get a bit firmer once they are cool. Let cool before giving one to your pup. Store in an air-tight container at room temperature for up to 1 week, in the fridge for up to 2 weeks, or I like to store them in an airtight container in my freezer which makes them firmer and makes them stay fresh for a long time.

Thank you so much for sharing this recipe. My fur baby just loves them. I actually put them in my cookie press. They are adorable. I do keep them in the freezer and give them to her from there. I am on my third batch.

Amazing! SO happy you love them 🙂
SARA CLARK says
well, it has all the yucky additives and sugar. I would say stick with natural. 🙂
Sara says
We made with crunchy peanut butter and didn't bake to become too hard. Left them a little chewy and the doggies love!!
Sam Turnbull @ It Doesn't Taste Like Chicken says
So happy they loved them 🙂
Joann says
Can you use regular peanut butter
Sam Turnbull @ It Doesn't Taste Like Chicken says
Hi Joan, I wouldn't recommend it as it contains sugars and oils which are not good for our pups. In a pinch you can use it, but just ensure it does not contain xylitol, as it is toxic to dogs.
Cavoodle mum says
Turned out great! I added a bit of honey as well. Baked perfectly my husband tried them and said they’re good just bland(for him).
My fur baby LOVES them, and her opinion is the only one that matters.
Laurie says
My dogs and neighbours dogs are obsessed. I bake til they’re quite hard then let them cool and air out a few days on a wire rack and they last a long time. They’re almost petrified. They’ve never gone bad on me and I haven’t yet met a dog who isn’t in love with these!! Thanks so much!
Sam Turnbull @ It Doesn't Taste Like Chicken says
Oh that's wonderful Laurie! Thrilled the dogs all love them and that you enjoy making them 🙂

Pepsi, Dexter & Smudge - the dogs says
These are tasty (so I'm told) and fun to make. They bake perfectly and hold their shape. I blizted the oats and the carrots separately in the food processor and then everything all together. Perfect dough, amazing consistency! Thank you for sharing this recipe.

Thank you Pepsi, Dexter & Smudge! - Chickpea dog.
Penny says
The mixture is very crumbly, although, all three of my dogs are loving the treats! 🙂
Sam Turnbull @ It Doesn't Taste Like Chicken says
Hi Penny, were you perhaps using peanut butter that contains added ingredients? For this recipe I recommend natural peanut butter which is the kind that you need to stir. The only ingredients should be peanuts. Natural peanut butter is much more liquidy so that could be the reason. If you did use natrual peanut butter and you still found it crumbly, try adding 1 tablespoon of water at a time until you reach the correct texture. I hope that helps!
Christina Passantino says
can I put into silicone molds?
Sam Turnbull says
Yes I think that would work as well. Enjoy!
Barry says
I use silicone molds rather a cutter. Works great but probably takes a bit longer prep time.

Your peanut butter pumpkin treats are a hit with the pups! I don’t have any of my own but always make them as gifts. Question, I’m trying to find something without peanut butter…could I substitute peanut butter for applesauce? Could I add peas to this recipe for extra protein for our furry friends?
Sam Turnbull says
Aww that's wonderful! You could substitute it with tahini! Enjoy!
Ivy wilson says
It’s an amazing project my dogs loved it so much and I tried it and it was good to!
Chelsa says
I recently tried one of these recipes and found that I can roll the dough right onto a silicone mat and bake the entire thing in one piece. I used a pizza cutter to cut into small squares as soon as I took it out of the oven and then let it cool. Maybe not as cute but so quick and easy and the dogs love them!
Charmaine says
I use 2 silicone baking sheets to roll out the dough. IT DOESN'T STICK! Rolls very easy.
Sam Turnbull says
Great idea!
Charmaine says
I love the dog treats. Do you have any cat treats? I make them for the Humane Society.
Sam Turnbull says
Hi Charmaine, no I do not. I don't have a cat so I have no way of testing them.
Kandice says
I made these for my Frenchie and she loved them. I love that they only have 3 ingredients and super simple to make. I don’t have a food processor so I did the mixing by hand and they still turned out great. Maybe a little chunkier but still baked perfectly with no crumbs once cool. I didn’t have any cute cutters the first time so I just used a round measuring spoon to cut them out. I specifically ordered the cutest French Bulldog cutter on Etsy to make these again and I’m fixing a second batch. Will continue to make for her. She has mild allergies and I have to be careful about ingredients, with these I know exactly what’s inside. Thanks for a simple yet great treat recipe! Maelee says they taste delicious!!!
Jess @ IDTLC Support says
We're so happy that Maelee likes them! 🙂
Kandice & Maelee The Frenchie says
Just made these again for the second time using my Frenchie Face cutter I got on Etsy specifically for these. They are too cute I wish I could post a picture to show you on this website. They turned out much better this time to me Bc they are cuter, but she liked the circles just fine! Ty again for the recipe and simplicity!
